Trust Artist Statement
For this photo I was inspired by the word “trust”. Trust can mean to believe in the reliability and truth of someone or something. I took this definition of trust and took it back to my childhood. When I was younger, and many can relate to this, my parents convinced me they were things they were not, such as the tooth fairy or the Easter bunny. However, as a child I trusted them because I was innocent and naive. My photo represents how you cannot always trust what your parents tell you, because in reality they were the tooth fairy all along. The story of my photo shows a young girl asleep, as a mom (the tooth fairy) is going to place money under her pillow.

The process behind this photo started with the setting. The photo was taken at night time in a completely dark room except for the lighting from the string lights. The young girl appears to asleep with stuffed animals in her bed for props to set the scene as a little girl’s bed. The mother’s body language shows her lifting the pillow to place the money underneath, an act of the tooth fairy. The young girl is turned away completely unaware that her mother is the one placing the money under her pillow. The story shows how when you are younger you trust your parents word, but you shouldn’t trust everything they say.
This photo is eye-opening to me to think that I trusted my parents on a lot of things that they lied to me about. I feel trust is very important in all relationships, and I find it interesting that our parents would deceive us in these ways. You can truly put all your trust in the wrong people or trust people you shouldn’t, and this photo is a light way of showing that.
